OUR STORY

The Hangar was founded in 2017 by Lukas Stuebi, in partnership with family and some epic Sunshine Coast community support.

As a keen climber and international transplant to the coast, Lukas was missing a place to boulder and craving a space to hang out and connect with other like-minded folk. Knowing climbing to be a community-building sport, he sought to create a space where active people could come together, make friends, and develop a strong local climbing scene for the area.

The Hangar quickly became a hub for folk to hang out and move their bodies, especially during the long, rainy winter months. As such, it became a hot spot for new coasters to find connection and community in their evenings. Many friendship groups - and a few romances - have sprung from time spent on The Hangar mats over the years.

The Hangar prides itself on setting new routes weekly to keep the climbing challenging and engaging for its members. And while there has been a huge uptake in climbing interest in our community, both from exposure at The Hangar and due to the rising popularity of the sport, the gym is probably best known as a friendship factory where all are welcome and many members stay for the community as much as the bouldering itself.

Now in its 8th year, it’s awesome to see couples who used to come in and climb together bring in their kiddos for weekend family fun. As the coast demographic builds towards more active families, and as Lukas experiences the dynamics of parenting himself, the future of the Hangar looks to invest in developing more kids and family programming while keeping the loyal climber base happy with the signature Hangar sets, comps, and socials.
